China 2008
China was a difficult deployment for the AMF. It would be fair to say that the red tape between the US Government and the Chinese Government was always to be a volatile situation. The cultural and political differences coupled with the highly charged year of the Olympics made for difficult time anyway.

This was a ground breaking project from its inception and as we sit back now and listen to the scientists they are all convinced that the data gathered is invaluable. For Mike & I it meant a year apart as it just would not have worked in the remote region of China for me to be there. It was a tough year at home. For me it was a bad year as well as I had a serious vehicle accident after dropping Mike at the airport in Darwin for him to return to China after his mid term holiday. It was a financially disastrous year with all the costs we incurred with Mike away and me at home.

I find it hard to understand but Mike with his usual “Let's get it done” attitude saw him survive and conquer all the challenges presented during the year in China. His moods fluctuated from happy to total depression with the daily problems, but I know if the challenge was thrown at him again he would do it all over. He made a lot of personal friends while there and I guess it is them that helped him keep it all together in his mind in the end. His beloved Ham Radio also saw him get a relatively speedy licence and attend the first ever “Hamvention” in China and give a long presentation and Q&A session on Amateur radio in Australia!

It was a wonderful day the day he walked thru the gates of Darwin Airport to come home to me so we could prepare for the deployment to the Azores!!

The photo gallery with this deployment is just a handful of photos of the time Mike had there. If anyone is interested in the China deployment I suggest you write to us and we can address any questions you have on China and supply many photos Mike took while he was there.
